Exercising during pregnancy

During the first few months of you pregnancy you may encounter sickness and lack of energy but once those initial months have finally come to an end and hopefully so have the symptoms, then maybe it's time to think about getting back into keeping fit and healthy throughout your pregnancy.

If you have never exercised or have done very little prior to your pregnancy I don't recommend starting a new intense fitness regime. Instead try some gentle exercise and stretching such as swimming or yoga. It may be worth speaking with your GP about any recommended fitness classes and checking your general health and wellbeing before committing to regular exercise. But if exercise is your thing and you're already a gym bunny, then here are some tips to keep it up;

Exercise won't just benefit you physically but also mentally. Physically exercise could encourage a better birth. Pregnancy puts strain on your pelvic floor and stomach muscles so staying active could help keep everything in shape. Being pregnant will play with your emotion's and moods so staying active could really help with mood swings and encourage the release of endorphins.

If you're attending gym classes just make sure you tell the instructor that you're pregnant so they can make appropriate adjustments to the routine if necessary.

Stay well hydrated, even if you don't normally carry a bottle of water, whether exercising or not, it is super important for yours and your babies health.

The best forms of exercise during your pregnancy:

  • Yoga

  • Swimming

  • Body Weighted exercise

  • Light weights

If you have had any bleeding or pain during your pregnancy then please make sure you discuss the possibilities of exercise with your Dr and midwife before hand. If morning sickness is still an issue after the initial term, then please speak with your GP before carrying out physical exercise as you may become dehydrated if unable to keep in fluids.
