The Pregnancy Scan Timeline

At premier Scans we offer a number of scan options and thought it might be useful for you to read a little more about each service and at what stage of your pregnancy you can have each scan.

Early Pregnancy Scans are available from 6 - 15 weeks gestation. Expectant mothers often decide to have an early pregnancy scan to determine the pregnancy and to calculate the date when your baby is due. At present it is not possible to see any signs of pregnancy before 5 weeks, so its advised to book in from 6 weeks gestation.

Gender Scans are available from 16 - 42 weeks gestation. Dependant on the position of your baby and how clear the views obtained by our equipment, we can predict the sex of your baby with an accuracy of 97%. A full bladder is required for optimum visibility of your baby during the scan.

4D Scans From 24 - 32 weeks gestation you are able to book yourself in for a 3D/4D Scan. New technology makes it possible to see into the world of your unborn child and capture your baby’s development. 4D scans have the added dimension of real time imaging enabling you to see your child yawning, arm stretches, kicking and sleeping. 3D scans tend to refer to the static images of your baby in 3 dimensions.

Anomaly Scans are detailed scans where your sonographer will examine the anatomy of your baby to exclude structural abnormalities early on. Although the anomaly scan can be performed between 18-24 weeks, it is generally performed around the 20 weeks mark. Anomaly scans are not performed before 20 weeks due to the fact your baby is not fully developed and their internal organs are not fully formed in order to be able to detect abnormalities.

Growth Scans. The purpose of a Growth Scan is to determine the health of your baby and if they are growing as they should. Usually performed between 24-42 weeks, growth scans include detailed measurements of your baby’s head as well as further details of the abdominal circumference. This scan also includes evaluation of the placental position, fetal movements and more.

The Presentation Scan will confirm the position of your baby and their growth as per the stage of your pregnancy to ensure they are developing as they should be. You will be provided with an in depth report at the end of the scan which will display the various measurements taken and any related charts.
