Did you know that more than 3000 babies are stillborn in the UK each year? That's a staggering one baby in every 200 born, but thankfully new NHS guidance is aiming to halve the stillbirth rate. It has never been more important for you to research ways in which you can aim to improve your health to ensure that your baby is as healthy as can be.
The new guidance will focus on the four key interventions. Smoking being the first with the hope to reduce pregnant women smokers. All women should then be offered an antenatal test to establish the level of carbon monoxide the fetus is exposed to as well as arranging a referral to help women to stop smoking. This will help to encourage a healthier pregnancy.
Secondly to enhance the detection of the fetal growth restriction by monitoring and recording using growth charts.
An information leaflet on reduced fetal movement is in the process of being launched and will be available to all women at 24 weeks of pregnancy. The guidance will also focus on improving awareness of the importance of fetal movement. basically women and their partners should be informed and more frequently monitor the movement of their baby and be given advice on how to do so most effectively.
Lastly is to then improve fetal monitoring during labour. It is said that the NHS is hoping to provide annual training for staff members and a buddy system for CTG interpretation (Cardiotocograms) so that a fresh outlook can be obtained to detect any potential issues.
