If this is your first pregnancy then pelvic floor exercises are probably something you have never really thought to consider in the past, but learning about your pelvic floor early on could make a huge difference to your birth and post pregnancy.
First of all let's talk about what your pelvic floor muscles actually are. There's a layer of muscles that surround your vagina and whole area down below around your anus and urethra. These muscles when healthy should be springy and thick. They basically act as a support for your bowel, bladder and uterus. The muscles can be found at the very bottom of your pelvis.
Our pelvic floor muscles are like any another, we can exercise them and strengthen them as they're used to control our bladder, bowels and also giving birth. You may have heard of or even experienced yourself incontinence, this is because your pelvic floor muscle have been damaged. This condition could mean you find it difficult to control your bladder and bowel.
Why exercise? If you carry out pelvic floor exercises during your pregnancy you could recover more quickly from child birth, you could help the prevention of incontinence and you could help prevent prolapse.
