Why Folic Acid is important during pregnancy!

If you're already pregnant you probably know the importance of the micronutrient B vitamin folic acid throughout your pregnancy, but if you're just at the prior stages of conception then it may be wise to start to research folic acid and find out why its so important to get the correct amount prior and during your pregnancy.

Folic acid is advised to reduce the chances of a neural tube defect. Ordinarily the neural tube folds and closes during week 3 and 4 of pregnancy and forms the brain and spinal cord.

  • Neural tube defects can develop into Anencephaly - missing parts of the brain and skull.

  • Encephalocele - Protrusion of the brain and dura due to incomplete closure of the skull.

  • Spina Bifida - Protrusion of the spinal cord due to incomplete closure of the spinal column.

Women are usually advised to take a 400mcg folic acid supplement prior to conception for the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. Women with a previous history of neural tube defect should take more, discuss this with your GP and Midwife. Try Pregnancare Plus which contain 400mcg of folic acid as well as other vitamins and minerals that will benefit you during your pregnancy.
